Carburizing

CARBURIZING

Carburizing is the oldest and most common of the surface hardening methods, consisting of introducing carbon into the surface of a low-carbon steel part.

Generally, carburizing is applied when it is desired to obtain a wear-resistant hard outer shell and an impact-resistant tough core structure.

For this purpose, depending on the intended use and part shape, parts can be hardened directly in oil from the carburizing temperature, or for core hardening, they can be reheated and hardened in oil after cooling in the furnace or air. After hardening, tempering is applied for stress relief and surface hardness adjustment.
